Tornado Advisories

Taxonomy Code: TH-2100.9500-850

Programs that activate warning systems (sirens or other mechanisms) and/or issue tornado watches which alert the public to the possibility of a tornado developing and/or tornado warnings which inform the public that a tornado has been spotted in the area or indicated by radar. Tornadoes are local atmospheric storms, generally of short duration, formed by winds rotating at very high speeds (sometimes in excess of 300 miles per hour), usually in a counter-clockwise direction. The vortex, up to several hundred yards wide, is visible to the observer as a whirlpool-like column of winds rotating about a hollow cavity or funnel. Tornado advisories may also include safety instructions for people who are in immediate peril.
